The overall mission of the Nebraska Community College Global Leadership Consortium is to provide opportunities to engage students and faculty from all the participating community colleges in joint global activities, which will include those sponsored by individual institutions and those sponsored by the consortium of Nebraska community colleges (Central Community College, Mid-Plains Community College, Northeast Community College, Southeast Community College and Western Nebraska Community College).

This eight-day excursion through Italy and Greece included stops in Florence, Rome, Sorrento, Patras, Delphi and Athens. Students toured the landmarks in Rome and Athens including:

  • Italy: Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel; St. Peter’s Basilica; Colosseum; Piazza Venezia; Forum Romanum; Spanish Steps; Trevi Fountain; Pantheon; and Piazza Navona.
  • Greece: Temple of Apollo; Parthenon; Acropolis; Temple of Athena Nike; Omonoia Square; Syntagma Square; Temple of Olympian Zeus; and Hadrian’s Arch

The Kenyan experience provided multiple opportunities for service learning as well as observing and participating in Kenyan culture, economics, education and agriculture. Highlights from this nine-day trip included:

  • Tours of the Osearian Flower Farm, Niansiongo Tea Plantation and Factory and the United Nations Office at Nairobi
  • An evening boat tour of Lake Naivasha
  • A safari in Nakuru National Park, a game drive through Nairobi National Park, and a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
  • Visits to Amasago St. Paul High School where SCC Instructor Danvas Mabeya used to teach Swahili and English, the Gusii Institute of Science and Technology, the Masige Primary School, and the United States International University in Nairobi
  • A discussion with the non-government agency ADRA about their work fighting Female Genital Mutilation

This six-day tour included visiting the following landmarks in London and Paris:

  • London: Westminster Abbey; London Eye; Big Ben; Buckingham Palace; Tower of London; and Stonehenge
  • Paris: Eiffel Tower; Arc de Triomphe; Versailles; Latin Quarter; Love Lock Bridge; the Lourve; and Notre Dame Cathedral
