Program Description
If you like science and puzzles, then a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is perfect for you! Medical laboratory technicians perform general tests that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Our program gives you hands-on learning experiences in the classroom, laboratory and clinical instruction in multiple areas (Phlebotomy, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology & Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunochemistry, and Transfusion Services). You will find support from our dedicated instructors and your classmates.

Medical laboratory technicians work in all areas of the clinical laboratory using high-tech instrumentation and microscopes to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. You will be a successful MLT if you:
- have a strong interest in science and technology
- like to solve puzzles
- are able to be careful and organized
- pay attention to detail
- utilize critical thinking skills
- have excellent communication skills
- maintain professionalism, including being honest, ethical and responsible
- can maintain confidentiality
Careers
Medical laboratory technicians are in high demand so you have excellent job opportunities. Most jobs will be in hospitals, but we expect employment growth in other medical settings. Recent SCC graduates report an average annual starting salary of $46,592. Career options include:

Medical Laboratory Technology Program Goals.
State Licensure or Certification Requirements
Upon successful completion of the program, and passing the national certification exam, graduates may find employment in all but three (3) states.
The states that accept the national certification may have additional licensing fees and/or exams depending on the state’s laws and guidelines.
States where licensure or certification requirements are not met by this program’s curriculum – California, New York, and North Dakota
State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement Institution
Southeast Community College is a State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement Institution (NC-SARA) institution. As such, SCC is unable to offer online or distance courses to students in the following areas at this time: American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
